Reiki

Reiki is the name given to the channelling of life force energy by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It is both a personal spiritual and healing practice and a method of offering healing to others. In both cases, ki (chi, prana, life force energy) is directed by the body to wherever it is needed within your physical, mental, emotional or spiritual being. The pracitioner acts only as a channel and as someone to hold a safe space for you to heal.

What is Reiki used for?

Reiki is very helpful in any situation where a client feels stuck, overwhelmed, stressed or in pain. Mental and emotional feelings are accompanied by stagnation, blocks, or overstimulation in a person's energetic field and so providing an influx of life force can help to clear or rebalance a client's energy.

Some people find the idea of having an energy field difficult to comprehend, and for others it's a given. My simplest answer is to tune in to your own energy and to that of the people around you. Just the act of paying attention, can begin to reveal the layers in what people say, do and feel, and in your own behaviours, thoughts and moods as well. We are constantly monitoring each other's emotions with a view to the potential implications for us, whether or not we are conscious of it. For example, the classic cartoon picture of someone in a rage having a angry cloud above their heads and everybody else shrinking away actually tells an accurate tale. When we're in a rage, we exactly are filling the air around us with our anger and everybody else is forced back by it!

What is it like?

Reiki is better experienced than described - however, past clients have said these sorts of things: "I feel so relaxed", "My pain has gone", "I feel so full of energy!", "I feel blessed", "I can't explain why / how, but I feel better, lighter, clearer".

The experience is personal because each person's needs are different so I find it helpful to ask the client for as clear an outcome as possible, which we both hold in mind for the duration of the treatment.

How a session works

Having established your outcome, you will be invited to lie fully clothed on a massage table, and to relax. The practitioner calls Reiki in and working from the head towards the feet, moves down the body placing their hands on or just above the body in the aura, enabling ki to flow directly in your body and energy field. You may focus on your breathing, on an image, on an outcome, or you may just relax and let go, even sleep. The treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes, and the whole session lasts an hour.
